Mindfulness Programs for Children, Youth and Teens
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is learning how to pay attention on purpose to the present moment. Paying attention to moment-to-moment awareness in a non-judgmental way, as defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn (2013). It is a gentle practice that invites curiosity and self-compassion towards attending to our body breath and observing the mind. Mindfulness is a way of being. The awareness of the present moment to support our well-being. Mindfulness trains the mind to work with distractions and focus better. It allows and brings clarity to the cause of our stressors. It helps us develop a greater acceptance to challenges. There is more and more research on mindfulness, when practiced regularly, changes the brain over time.
Mindfulness Stress Based Reduction For Teens.
This MBST-T program was created by Gina Biegel; the MBSR-T is an adaptation of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program for adults (Kabat-Zinn). MBSR-T has a strong foundation in development theory and considers the cognitive and attention abilities of youth ages 13 to 18. MBSR-T has been used in a number of settings. MBSR-T is not meant to replace a successful medication regimen; ongoing psychological treatment, mindfulness awareness, and meditation are excellent tools to help aid and enhance emotional and social development. This workshop does not provide any form of therapy or assessment of teens' mental health. The intention of MBSR-T is for teens to learn new skills and tools to support ways of responding to high stressors and create adaptability to their daily functions. This is an 8-week program, at 90 mins per session.
